Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

Aliens
Alienation from God is something many people blame on God. Paul indicates here that alienation is in our minds as a result of our evil behavior.
While probably not what you want to hear about why something bad has happened to you, Paul makes it very clear--humans are God's enemies because of their own doing--evil behavior.

Even though it's not Gods fault at all, He still provides reconciliation through Christ.
