Timeless Truths: Hope for Wandering Hearts and Eyes… A view from Colossians
Hope for Wandering Hearts and Eyes… A view from Colossians
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:12-17

The focus of this part of the “Wandering…” study is “what Kingdom love looks like.”
Paul begins by reminding the believers in Colossae that they are God’s chosen people, “holy and dearly loved.” God’s chosen people treat each other as Children of God.
In verse 15, Paul makes it clear that any love that does not bind people together is not spiritual love.
- We need to live as God’s holy children.
- We need to live as part of a body of believers. We can’t do this by ourselves.
- God can transform our desire to seek our own pleasure into a desire to honor the one God has chosen for us.
It has been said that “faith is on what or whom you set your heart.” Faith that saves comes from setting our hearts on God alone.
- Don’t trust in rules
- Don’t trust in self.
- Stay true to the vows you made.
- Believe in one another as children of God.
Following the steps above leads to a good and beautiful life. Nothing in this world teaches us to treat our partners as children of God.
Only trusting Christ will lead to God’s good and beautiful life.
