Timeless Truths. What Christians Believe about Jesus

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Matthew 11: 21-24
This post is the second of three Timeless Truths posts that highlight portions of the Apostle's Creed.

The Apostle's Creed is the earliest attempt by the church to codify beliefs.

  • There were several changes until the 7th Century.
  • Christians used it extensively at baptisms.
  • It tells Christians What and Who defines us.
  • It reminds us of history and predecessors.
  • It defines true values that shape and form us by showing how the church/Scripture/God combine in the formation of our beliefs.

This is an "all or none" statement. It is not a cafeteria of choice you can choose or ignore.

The whole world has an idea who Jesus is.
When Jesus came, He brought a clear picture of who God is.
Jesus spoke of Himself as a Good Shepherd and a Gatekeeper.
You can't have one without the other.

Jesus was real and here on Earth.
Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua.
Faith is linked to this reality.
This is the foundation of belief.
Most people will not argue about Jesus' existence.

God sent Jesus to save the world.
He

  • was born to the virgin Mary.
  • grew up in Judea.
  • grew into his ministry.

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 16:13-16
Jesus asks His disciples, "Who do people [including you] say I am?"
Peter gives the answer, "Messiah" or Savior of the World.
Our lives have meaning through Him.
Jesus' life means nothing without His death and resurrection.

Jesus was the ONLY SON of God, not one of His Sons.
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the [emphasis mine] Son of God!”Matthew 27:54

Jesus is LORD.
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:24
Jesus

  • is the hinge for your faith.
  • fastens you to God.
  • opens the door to a restored life.
  • holds the past and the future together, allowing us to live as God calls us to live.

Jesus not only connects us to God, He also connects us to one another.
See James 2 for practical advice and guidance in this area.

Peter states what is found in the Apostles' Creed in Acts 2:36

“Therefore I clearly state to everyone in Israel that God has made this Jesus you crucified to be the Lord, the Messiah!” (Living Bible)
