Miracle #2 – Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit – Mark 1:21-28 |
Why did Mark choose this miracle for his first example of Jesus’ divine power?
- The demon used Jesus’s name to try and gain power over him, but this shows that Jesus has power over demons/Satan.
- The demon recognized Jesus from before the fall of Satan’s legions and used the 1st-person PLURAL pronoun for “him.”
- The news spread quickly.
- See 1 John 4:1-2 for more on testing spirits.
You don’t hear much about evil spirits in America today. Why not?
- We think we can cure anything.
- We deny evil spirits can be a problem so we want another explanation.
Because of the above, what might be some medical misdiagnosis today?
- Multiple personalities.
- PTSD.
- Mental health.
- Epilepsy.
What is Satan’s role in demon possession?
- Satan is their ruler whose sole purpose is that we don’t depend on God.
- To create doubt, confusion, and fear… those lead to Satan.
Dissecting the Miracle
What did this evil spirit do when it took over the human?
- Made him cry out (v26) “what do you want. Have you come to destroy me?” He admits to knowing Jesus.
- He shouted and screamed… SHRIEKED!
- Jesus never touched the man. His voice was calm.
Why did it use Jesus' name?
- To try and get control over Jesus.
Jesus' response has two parts.
- What? Be quiet. Get out. Both were said sternly.
- Why? To show His authority. It becomes a teaching moment when He sends out His disciples. The demon disrupted Jesus’s calling.
The NIV uses “sternly” to describe Jesus’ action. The word is the same one Jesus uses in Mark 4:19. Explain why the term is appropriate for both miracles.
- Evil Spirit: Showed control of the situation.
- Calm the Sea: Jews of that time thought bad weather was the result of demonic action. Showed His authority over with “Peace. Be still.”
