TimelessTruths: That My Name Might Be There

5. “That My Name Might Be There.”
February 4, 2016

All Scripture quotations are from the NIV.

God gave King David the dream of building a wonderful temple in Jerusalem to the glory of God.

God gave David the reason that He wanted the temple to be built… “that My name might be there [Jerusalem]” (2 Chron 6:5-7) But we must remember that God does not dwell in any building.
David’s son, Solomon was the one who saw to it that the temple was built. On the day of dedication of the temple
All the Levites who were musicians—Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets. The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the LORD. (2 Chron 5:12)
Their song had two verses.
  1. He [God is] good.
  2. His [God’s] love (mercy) endures forever.

While the song being sung, God’s Presence filled the temple and human activity had to stop.
Then the temple of the LORD was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God. (2 Chron 5:14)

Three things happened while God’s Presence filled the temple.

1. The proclamation of blessing was given.
Every day we can look two ways: back and forward. When we look back, let it be with gratitude for what God has done—how He has blessed us. When we look forward, it should be with prayer that we might remain faithful.

2. The presence and glory of God was there. The altar could not contain all the offerings of the people. God honors faithful and generous stewardship. In the giving described here, sacrifice was a prime ingredient—it should be in our giving as well.
True worship takes place when people confess their sins, find forgiveness, and bring their sacrifice of praise to the altar of God.

3. The praise of the people.
Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the temple of the LORD was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God. (2 Chron 5:13-14)

You can count on God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness. Be need to be part of a redemptive community that takes God’s name to our community and our world.
You can count on the promises of God. Be secure in His protection and provision. If we follow God, He will provide and protect.

Our Job Description is Simple, Profound and Mandatory.
To take the name of God with us wherever we go.
