Timeless Truths: Kids: Whose Idea Was This? #5-7

Timeless Truths: Kids: Whose Idea Was This? #5-7

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of min and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Jesus speaking in Matthew 7:24 [NIV]

Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
    the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows
    are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
    with your quivers full of children!
Your enemies don’t stand a chance against you;
    you’ll sweep them right off your doorstep.
(Psalm 127:3-5 MSG)

Key Questions.
Is it possible to be successful and have a healthy family?
Is it possible to raise faithful children in today’s world?
Let’s look at the way God treats His children.

Last week we learned…
KIDS NEED:
1. LOVE WITHOUT LIMITS.
let us love one another, for love comes from God. (1 John 4:7)
2. BOUNDARIES WITH A BASIS IN GOD’S WORD.
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
3. DISCIPLINE WITH DIRECTION.
Discipline your children while you still have the chance; indulging them destroys them. (Proverbs 19:18 MSG)
4. ASSURANCE (time) WITH AFFIRMATION (talk).
Parents, don’t come down too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits. (Colossians 3:21 MSG)

Now, let’s continue.

KIDS NEED:
5. CELEBRATION WITHOUT A CAUSE.
It is a wonderful thing to be alive! If a person lives to be very old, let him rejoice in every day of life, but let him also remember that eternity is far longer and that everything down here is futile in comparison.
(Ecclesiastes 11:7-8 Living Bible)
  • The home should be a safe place
  • Make sure you allow spontaneous celebration and not only planned events.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES WITH RESPECT.
Jesus went on to make these comments:
If you’re honest in small things,
    you’ll be honest in big things;
If you’re not honest in small jobs,
    who will put you in charge of the store?
 (Luke 16:10,12 MSG)
  • Responsibility must be taught and learned.
  • Responsibility must be given if it is to be learned.
  • Parents must give up control.
  • Doing “for” kids takes away their responsibility.

7. CONSISTENCY WITHOUT COMPROMISE.
Your kingdom is a kingdom eternal;
    you never get voted out of office.
God always does what he says,
    and is gracious in everything he does.
Everything God does is right—
    the trademark on all his works is love.
 (Psalm 145:13,17 MSG)
  • More damage is done to children through inconsistency and compromise than almost anything else.
  • Inconsistency leads to bitterness.

Bottom line.
It takes wisdom to build a house,
    and understanding to set it on a firm foundation
(Proverbs 24:3 MSG)
  • Both wisdom and understanding are required for a healthy family.
