Timeless Truths. The Dynamic Duo

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 1:1-18
John 1 is both a flashback and a preview.

[Jesus] came from the Father, full of grace and truth
The world needs both grace and truth.

1. Grace is God giving Himself to us.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We all need grace because we all have sinned.

Grace is
Free
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Ephesians 2:8
Sacrificial
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake, he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9
Sufficient
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:9
Priceless
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
Ephesians 1:7

2. Truth is God revealing Himself to us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father
No matter what you FEEL about the truth,
it doesn't change the truth.
The Bible has all the truth you need.

Truth is
Timeless
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6
Tough
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
Hebrews 10:26

To be taught
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
A test
But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
Romans 2:8
A trust.
[God our Saviour] wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:4

God entrusted us with truth.
Truth is not forced upon us.

3. Grace and truth are loved out in the life of an influential Christian

Grace precedes truth. This happens in every one of Jesus' encounters. (e.g., the woman at the well, healing at the pool, the woman caught in adultery.)

There is a time for grace and a time for truth.

Christians are called to extend grace and stand for truth.
Don't be too wimpy or too strict!

God's call on our lives is to mix
His grace and His truth effectively.
