Thoughts on Study Questions from Acts Ch 6 on 10/14

My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. I posted these questions this Monday and encouraged you to jot your thoughts down.
It's Wednesday. This post consists of some comments from the class discussion.

Chapter 6V1-7

Who in the OT did something similar? Read Ex 18:13-26.
Moses.
His father-in-law, Jethro advises him to share the load of responsibility and give some of the less important decisions to others.

What were the qualifications for service?
Wisdom.
Filled with the Holy Spirit.
Of good repute.
Probably faithful and Greek, too.

What is particularly noteworthy about the description of Stephen?
Full of
FAITH
HOLY SPIRIT

How were they inaugurated?
The apostles prayed and laid hands on them.
Today this is common in ordinations, commissions, and healing services.

Verse 7 mentions a group of converts largely unheard of until now. Who are they? Why do you think they are "suddenly" interested in the Gospel?
Priests.
One commentary called them pious but not high and mighty.
They believed the Jesus was the Messiah.
They were obedient to God's leading.
They rethought their lives after seeing the life transformations of the converts.

Ch 6 - V8-15
Stephen's description sounds more like he is part of what group rather than that one of the "waiters"?
The apostles because of his preaching.

Why, based only on the limited knowledge we have of Steve so far, is this not surprising?
He was filled with the Holy Spirit.

1. Who are the people that first oppose Stephen? 2. Why might that be significant?
1. Members of the Synagogue of Freedmen, possibly where Stephen attended.

This group was a holdover from the time of the Exile. The requirement for "ten or more men" to be present to form a synagogue comes from this time period.
2. He was preaching against the Temple rites and rituals.

What was the plan of the opposition?
Have some people lie.
Stir up the people against Stephen.

Synagogue of the Freedmen's strategy includes truth along with lies. One thing said about Stephen was used against Jesus at His trial. What was it? Is it true or false?
Blasphemy.
It was true to the remaining Jews. It was a lie in reality because of the New Covenant.

We got this far this week.
