#BibleStudy Comments on Questions from James Ch 1 04-12-2020
If you followed my blogs on Hebrews and Acts, you recall the questions discussed are posted on Monday and a sampling of the discussion of each question is posted the following Wednesday. That will continue with minor cosmetic adjustments.
If this is your first experience with my blogs, I invite you to copy and paste the questions into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions before next week. We rarely do more than 6 or 8 questions in a given week.
I hope you'll explore this practical book along with us.
Chapter 1
Verses 13-18
Where does temptation come from?
- Selfish desires, NOT from God.
- We are lured by our selfish desires.
- Desires drag us down.
- It started in the Garden of Eden with Eve and the serpent.
- Free will.
- Mishandling of our free will.
- It can start small, just an urge.
- It comes from where you hang around.
- Lust.
- Don't linger in lust.
- The pull of humanity's evil thoughts.
- This is a four-step process: Entice - Entrap - Endorse - Enslave
Why can’t God be tempted?
- Because God had no evil in Him.
- He doesn't to be wrong.
- Other Scriptures (Job) state the Satan needs God's permission to tempt us.
- God does not have the fallen nature of humanity.
What is it about God’s nature that makes it impossible for Him to tempt us for evil?
- Fellowship is important: Peter and Judas are examples.
- EASTER is a perfect example.
- Without the cross and the empty tomb, we cannot get out of the chains of death.
- God encourages us to do right. Temptation is also a chance to do right.
- Sometimes God doesn't do "what's right" because of His mercy.
Vv 2-4 describe a progression. What is the progression described in vv14-15?
- Desire - Sin/Action - Death
- There are common desires, but we all have unique desires, too.
- God never tempts and is never tempted.
1 Corinthians 10:13 New International Version (NIV)
13 No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
