#BibleStudy Study Questions from James Ch 9-4 on 08/2/2020
For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.
Questions discussed are posted on Monday and a sampling of the discussion of each question is posted the Wednesday of that week. That will continue with minor cosmetic adjustments.
If this is your first experience with my blogs, I invite you to copy and paste the questions into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions before next week. We rarely do more than 6 or 8 questions in a given week.
I hope you'll explore this practical book along with us.
I'll post our answers on Wednesday.
Chapter 3
V13-18
What can we do to grow in heavenly wisdom?
Chapter 4
We spent time talking in general terms about the following commentary and checking other passages footnoted in various translations.
COMMENTARY
* First part of the chapter reproves the Jews for the real causes of their wars: not spiritual and national zeal but selfish lusts
* In verse 2, the kind of things not obtainable are gratification, contentment, and happiness we seek. - these types of things cannot be satisfied or appeased by obtaining the desired objects or else they are totally disappointed
* Verse 4 warns us against "criminal relationships with the world" - a man may have a competent portion of the good things of life and still keep himself in the love of God - The grace of God will correct and cure the spirit that naturally dwells within us
* Scripture referred to by James in v5 is not known. Spirit within us refers to the creation of man (see the footnote in NIV Study Bible.)
* Verses 4-7 contain 10 commands which demand immediate action in the Greek verb tense
* OT priests washed their hands and feet before entering the Temple as a sign of spiritual cleansing
* Grieve, mourn, wail refer to a repentant spirit
* We must not report on evil things done by others unless there is very good reason for it (necessary occasion) - never report on any false evil accusations
WE GOT THIS FAR THIS WEEK.
Chapter 4
Verses 1-10
What causes fights and quarrels?
What does it mean to kill? (v2)
Why do we not receive what we request from God?
Why does James use the term "adulterous people" (literally adulteresses - female form only) in v4?
