#BibleStudy Signs and Wonders – Miracles – Discussion on 11-1-2020

Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus on the list below. The first 2-3 weeks will be a discussion of miracles throughout the Bible.

The comments below are what from our discussion this week. Next week is now an expansion of this week's focus on Biblical miracles. The expanded part will include examples of miracles by class members. If you'd like a copy of the discussion sheet for next week, email me at the address in the signature at the end of this post.

Signs and Wonders – Miracles

Sunday School Lesson Series

Based on Signs and Wonders: Thirteen Miracles from the Life of Christ

Serendipity House ©1998 - ISBN: 1-57494-107-0

Introduction

Define Miracle

Without looking

  • Something extraordinary
  • Can’t be explained.
  • Supernatural.
  • It’s good/positive for the person

After looking

  • A surprising event that’s unexplainable without Divine Agency

Why does God use miracles?

  • To get people’s attention.
  • To help people.
  • To show God’s power.

Describe 4 miracles, each from a different book in the Old Testament.

1. Gen 1:1-31 – Description: Creation

  • God creates the world. God’s Spirit is prominent.
  • Not only is this the beginning of Earth, but it’s also the beginning of time and substance.
  • Ephesians talks about God as the Creator
  • Verse 26 foreshadows Jesus by using “US” not “I.”
  • God only needs to speak the world into existence.
  • God chose Earth as His.

Purpose

  • So we can be God’s companions during our physical lives and for eternity.

2. Exodus 3 – Description: The burning bush

  • The bush burns but is not consumed. It’s on fire, it doesn’t spread, or stop burning.
  • God calls the ground hallowed/holy and describes Himself as “I AM.”
  • Angel of the Lord = a manifestation of Jesus in the Old Testament.

Purpose

  • Impress Moses and call him to serve.
  • Moses knew God from his mother’s teaching while he was growing up in Pharaoh’s court.

3. 1 Kings 17:21+ Description: Elijah and the widow’s son

  • Zarephath is Sidon.
  • The widow saw her son’s death as punishment.
  • God put the idea of helping Elijah into her mind.
  • The miracles of never-ending supplies of flour and oil come only after the woman agrees to use her last amounts of each to feed the prophet.

22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!”

24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”

1 Kings 17:22-24

Purpose

  • God cares for us.
  • God is all-powerful.
  • It takes faith to supply a need.
