Miracle #1 – Water into Wine – John 2:1-11

What’s the issue that brings Jesus to the spotlight?

  • They ran out of wine
  • Embarrassment
  • Any shortage would have been tragic in the eyes of the host

Why involve Mary?

  • Maybe she heard God’s direction.
  • She was available and a friend of the family
  • Mary was a typical Jewish mother and expected Jesus to help
  • Jesus was used to his family asking for help since he was the “father figure” after Joseph’s death.
  • Maybe she acted strictly under God's direction.

What motivated most people wanting a sign or miracle from Jesus?

  • Physical needs were the most common requests.
  • Prophets in the Old Testament did them.
  • To help people strengthen their faith.

What does Jesus mean by

“why do you involve me?”

  • Jesus is reminding her of His true calling.

“My time is not yet come.”

  • It might not have been a spiritual moment for Mary.

Why did Mary ignore Jesus’ comments?

  • She wanted to help the family save face.
  • She was concerned with the “here and now.”
  • It was her way of saying, “The ball’s in Your court,” to Jesus.
  • She did not consider his words as a rebuke, and Jesus did respond by doing what she wanted Him to do.
