Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus on the list below. The comments below are from our discussion this week.

Miracle #4 – Healing a Paralytic – Mark 2:1-12

Overall impression

  • Preaching.
  • Power to heal.
  • Faith and hope/never give up attitude of the men.
  • They found a novel way to get into the house.
  • Did they fix the roof?

What are some conditions that made someone a generic “paralytic” that have their own titles now?

  • Cerebral palsy.
  • Injury.
  • Stroke.
  • Polio.
  • Post polo syndrome.
  • Spinal damage.

There is no mention of prayer in this miracle. Comment on that.

  • It might not have been audible.
  • Most miracles don’t mention prayer.
  • They prayed before the event.

Why did 4 guys decide to do what they did?

  • They heard of/saw Jesus in the past.
  • They might have been responsible for the man’s spinal injury.
  • Brotherly love.

Do you think this house was a Synagogue? Explain.

  • It could have been since most synagogues were in homes.
  • Several commentaries indicated this was Peter’s house.

Pretend you are one of those 4 men. What’s your first plan?

  • Have Jesus heal your friend by walking in with him and asking for healing.
  • Get to the house and wing it.
  • They expected a crowd but thought people would let them through to Jesus.

How does that plan change when you get to the house?

  • It’s kind of a miracle that they had a Plan B.
  • They want to get to Jesus.
  • Now or never.
  • Make a hole in the roof.

Describe the discussion before the decision to tear a hole in the roof.

  • It has to be done.
  • Send a scout to the roof.
  • Get to the roof by steps or ladder.
  • Circumvent the crowd.

How does our class parallel the 4-men’s actions?

  • Determination.
  • Overcame obstacles to keep our class meeting.
  • We carry each other through prayer.
