Miracle #4 – Healing a Paralytic – Mark 2:1-12

Besides leprosy and paralysis, what differences can you find between the 3rd miracle we discussed and this one?

Leper:

  • Was alone.
  • Human contact with Jesus.
  • Asked for healing.
  • Was told not to talk about it.

Paralytic:

  • Brought to Jesus by friends.
  • Jesus only talked to him—not physical contact.
  • Didn’t ask for healing.
  • Left the house talking about his healing.

Why were the causes of evil spirit takeover, leprosy, and paralysis all be attributed to sin?

  • Everything bad that happened was blamed on sin by the sufferer.
  • One source reported that there is a demon named Paralysis.

Why does Mark include WAY more about Jesus’s miracles than His preaching?

  • “That’s a good question.”
  • Mark’s audience not predominantly Jewish.
  • To encourage Roman Christians by showing Jesus is the Son of God.

How does Luke describe this man? Why is it different than Mark’s?

  • Many versions/translations use the same term, although the actual study book indicates Luke's term is how a doctor would have described the injury.
  • Palsy is in some versions/translations while Paralyzed (spinal damage) is in others.

What was the roof made of?

  • Straw and mud between beams three feet apart.
  • Dried mud could have been “tiles.”

What’s going on in the house while chunks of roof are falling on the listeners?

  • Jesus is speaking.
  • People start looking up and moving away from the debris.
  • There might not have been much going on. Falling debris might have been a common occurrence.

“This story shows that faith is not simply belief, but an ‘energetic grasping of the help and power of God.’[Fuller]”

Whose faith was responsible for the paralytic’s healing? Comment.

  • The four men’s faith.
  • There is no description of the paralytic’s faith.
  • PEOPLE WERE AMAZED BY THIS MIRACLE.

How much faith did the paralytic have?

  • Enough faith to get up (obedience) when Jesus tells him to.
  • He was ready to serve.
  • He felt the healing.
