Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus. This week is the last week discussed miracles throughout the Bible.
The questions below are what we discussed this week.
I'll post highlights from our discussion on Wednesday.
Miracle #8 – A Sick Woman Touches Jesus – Mark 5:24-34
How does Jairus’s approach to Jesus compare with this woman’s?
- Jairus goes openly to Jesus and asks Him to help in desperation and greets Him from the front.
- The woman sneaks up from behind. She was humble and afraid because she wasn’t supposed to be there by law.
Why?
- Jairus served in an administrative capacity in his synagogue leader.
- The woman was ritually unclean.
What happens as soon as she touches Jesus?
- Both the woman and Jesus know something happened.
- Jesus knew who touched Him because He felt power leave Him.
- Woman felt Jesus’s power and knew she was healed.
Why did Jesus ask, “Who touched me?”
- Jesus wanted others in the crowd/disciples to know.
- He wanted others to know something happened.
- He felt healing power leave Him.
Wouldn’t He know?
- Yes, but He wanted the woman to do the right thing. It’s like “having a Bible” vs. “reading the Bible.”
This is after Jesus calms the sea and He casts out demons. What’s odd about the disciples' response?
- It shows a lack of faith on their part, even after recent events (feed 5K, demons cast out, etc.).
- The disciples were in a hurry to see “a real miracle” when Jesus would heal the girl.
- There had been FEW miracles, if any, in Judea for 400 years.
Why did the woman admit it was her touch?
- She believed in Jesus.
- It’s why she came to Jesus.
- She knew how unclean she was, but Jesus kept looking for her.
BONUS THOUGHTS THIS WEEK
- Factoid. The woman was unclean for 12-years. Jairus’s daughter is 12-years-old.
- Other accounts of this miracle.
- Matthew. It's the shortest account because Jews needed no explanation of the uncleanliness of the woman and how “against the Law” all this was.
- Luke. The most detailed medical account, which figures since he was a physician.
