Thoughts on Hebrews Questions from May 14
HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS/THOUGHTS
My Sunday School Life Group started a study in Hebrews last Sunday. Until we finish that study, my Expression of Faith posts--except for a couple in Advent and Lent--will be from Hebrews.
I'm posting questions every Mondays that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I encourage you to ponder/think and jot down your thoughts.
I am posting some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider on Wednesdays.
Make yourself comfortable, this is most likely going to be a year-long experience.
Keep this in mind as we go through the study:
"Religion" is a group responsibility to Jews but an individual responsibility to Christians.
Chapter 1:1-4
Give an example of God speaking through the prophets.Moses with the Jews and Pharaoh. Noah with is neighbors. Jonah in Nineveh--finally. Today's Bible contains two sections of prophecy in the Old Testament: Major Prophets and Minor Prophets. The divisions are based roughly on how much prophecy of that prophet we have. There's even an "unnamed prophet" in 1 Samuel 2:27-42. Bottom line: To be a prophet of God, you must be right 100% of the time!
Besides words, how else did prophets get information out?
There was a lot of tearing of clothing and sitting in ashes. Moses staff transformed into a snake and ate the staffs of the Egyptian sorcerers (Exodus 4). No rain for YEARS in Elijah's time (1 Kings 18). Unlimited flour and oil by Elisha (2 Kings 4).
What's the difference between "in the past" and "these last days"?
The past days have already happened. "these last days" look to the future.

How is Christ described in v3A?
"radiant glory." He is the sole expression of God.
How do we know that Christ is superior to the angels?
Christ sits at Gods' right hand--a place of power. His name is "Son of God." He was the first raised back from the dead. He's coming again.

In vv2-3, track down 7 statements about Jesus.
What's the importance of v4? Hint: Deut 33:2.
Angel's are for support. Clearly shows the Superiority of God. Jesus inherits "Son of God" as His name. Names in NT times represented who a person was.

Chuck,
ReplyDeleteI like what the Adult Bible Felloship Study Book dated 2002 has to say: "It is clear that while there is continuity between the revelation mediated by the prophets and that reflected and refracted in Jesus, yet there is radical discontinuity as well. Between all who came before and Jesus is an infinite difference.
