Thoughts on Questions on Hebrews Ch 11 from 2/11
THOUGHTS ON HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS
My Sunday School Life Group is studying Hebrews. Every Monday, I post questions that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I invite you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts.
On Wednesdays, I post some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider and compare with your thoughts.
These questions were discussed in my Life Group Monday. This post presents thoughts from the class discussion.
Chapter 11
Vv 17
Chart time #1! Why are each of these included: Abel, Enoch, Noah? Fill in the appropriate blanks after checking the OT references.
Black text is from the completed chart I downloaded. Red text is from the class discussion.
Hebrews 11 is a series of commentaries on various Biblical characters. Each is commended for the significant faith shown in their life. As we go along, we’ll read each Old Testament passage and you can fill in the chart below along with the answers to the questions. Yep. More work! The fill-in starts with verse 3.
PERSON | DESCRIPTION | ACT(S) OF FAITH | SCRIPTURE PASSAGES |
Abel | Adam and Eve’s second son, younger brother of Cain. Cain killed Abel when Abel offered a better sacrifice to the Lord. · Abel means “Breath” or “Vapor.” · Cain and Abel represent two ways of approaching God. · Abel: Did well and is listed first. His sacrifice was acceptable. · Cain: Had a selfish heart. God warns him of his attitude in scripture and provides him with a way to be accepted. (Gen 4:6-7) | Offered the best parts of a lamb as a sacrifice to the Lord · There is a hint that God required the shedding of blood as the standard of acceptable sacrifice when he used skin of an animal to provide Adam and Eve with clothing. · Abel sacrificed the first born of his flock. · God was please with Abel’s sacrifice.
Enoch | Little information is given about Enoch in the Bible. Instead of saying he died, the Bible says that God "took him away." · One of two Biblical characters that did not die. (Elijah in 2 Kings 2:11. · One of only two Biblical characters that were commended as “walking with God.” · Only other reference to him is in Jude 14-15. | "truly loved God" · He lived close to God.
Noah | Son of Lamech and great grandson of Enoch. His name sounds like the Hebrew word for "comfort." · The other Biblical character commended as “walking with God.” · Genesis 3:17-18 describes how the land will be hard to grow food in. · Lamech named his son “Noah and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed.” Perhaps that is a prediction of the flood as a response to the curse in Chapter 3. · He found favor with God and received grace from God. | Believed God’s warning that God was going to destroy the evil people of the world in a flood. Built a large boat (ark) as God commanded to save his family and animals. · Noah was the only righteous man in his time. · He did what was right in God’s sight. |
