#BibleStudy Expressions of Faith. Acts Ch 5 Keep Proper Priorities

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
Acts 5:1-4

Keep Proper Priorities

Things were going well.

  • Attendance was increasing.
  • Offerings were strong.
  • Foodservice to all attendees was . . .

In spite of all the went on in Jerusalem following Pentecost, people—even Christian people—were people.

  • They still are!

Whether the treatment of Grecian widows was total neglect or just discriminatory, Grecian Christians were upset.

  • It’s clear that the apostles agreed there was a problem.
  • More important than acknowledging the problem, they did not rush to BE the solution to that problem.
  • The apostles kept their priorities straight.
  • In a short time, seven men with ties to the Grecian community were chosen to deal with the issue.
  • Their names are Greek.

It’s good to be reminded not to try and be the solution to every problem in your church community.

  • You’re not free of all responsibility, either.
  • Don’t neglect your ministry.

Information I found in my collection of sermon notes presents these three points for this passage of Scripture.

  1. Keep the main thing the main thing.
  2. Honestly address potential distractions.
  3. Share the burden of ministry.

Keep your priorities straight!
