#BibleLesson #TimelessTruths Disrupted Life - Spiritual Awakening
This sermon is part of a five-part series. I'm using this one this week because people in my Sunday school class agreed it was a good example of a progression in Christian life. Read the post at this URL to see if you agree:
Wanting to please God:
Washing/drying/kissing Jesus' feet:
BROKENNESS.
SELF-CONTROL.
HUMILITY.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
DISCERNMENT.
PEACE AND JOY.
FREEDOM.
RENEWED INTEREST IN SCRIPTURE.
Thanks to Pastor Tony Miller for the primary teaching in this post.
Wanting to please God:
But I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.
Psalm 59: 16-17
Washing/drying/kissing Jesus' feet:
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
...
47 I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Luke 7:36-39, 47-50
What would it be like if you were on fire for God?
There are 8 signs of Spiritual Awakening that help you answer the question posed above. A spiritual awakening is not just a renewed interest in God!BROKENNESS.
- Only in this does your self-image change to God.
SELF-CONTROL.
- Sometimes the process is quick. Sometimes it takes time.
HUMILITY.
- Humility is easily recognized in every culture.
- A good leader shows strength and confidence at every turn.
- A GREAT leader shows strength in humility.
- The less your spirit gets in the way, the more God's Spirit can do in you.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
- Willing to sacrifice to give to others.
- Spiritual Awakening does not lead to loss of self.
- Spiritual Awakening leads to the willingness to set self aside when appropriate.
DISCERNMENT.
- Sin is often fuzzy because your thinking is out of focus to you because your thinking is out of focus without God.
- Discernment unleashes a spiritual common sense in you.
PEACE AND JOY.
- It's not physical comfort or temporary happiness.
- These come from God ---> from REALLY KNOWING GOD.
FREEDOM.
- When God is primary in your life, everything else is secondary.
- You are called to please God.
- When you follow that call, ethics and all of life fall into place.
RENEWED INTEREST IN SCRIPTURE.
- You find direction for life in the Bible.
