Miracle #6 – Jesus Calms a Storm – Mark 4:35-41

What’s the difference between fearful and terrified? Hint: look for Greek terms.

Greek from Strong’s Concordance on Bible Hub

Fearful is phobos = fear.

Terrified is ekphobos = wholly frightened (literally out of one's wits).

Class discussion

TerrifiedPanic. More extreme than fearful. Paralyzed.

AfraidState of mind.

  • Both are emotional.
  • Knowing God is near keeps us from either emotion.

What was Jesus’ tone of voice in v40?

  • Irritated
  • Frustrated
  • Calm

What’s the most common cause of storms in your life?

  • Sometimes God wants me to see where I need to grow.
  • Expectations not met or different outcomes.
  • Doing something I know I’m not supposed to do.
  • Need for control.

What do you do when storms happen?

  • “Really, God?”
  • Remember that God is with me and supplies my needs.
  • Give God the glory.
  • Worry until I let God have control.

How has your faith in Christ impacted the way you handle storms?

  • Pray first.
  • Help me learn a lesson.
  • I’m not in this alone.
  • Look for God’s timing.
  • Reflect on past situations.

Why would you sail at night?

  • I wouldn’t!
  • Fishing all night was not uncommon.
  • Cooler and calmer at night.
  • If Jesus told me to.
  • The boat was Jesus’s getaway.
  • Jesus is “calmer” all the time.
  • Follow Jesus rather than our plans.

BONUS THOUGHTS THIS WEEK

“Through It All” is a song with one key verse

(highlightedthat addresses this topic.

I've had many tears and sorrows,
I've had questions for tomorrow,
there's been times I didn't know right from wrong.
But in every situation,
God gave me blessed consolation,
that my trials come to only make me strong.

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus,
I've learned to trust in God.

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His Word.

I've been to lots of places,
I've seen a lot of faces,
there's been times I felt so all alone.
But in my lonely hours,
yes, those precious lonely hours,
Jesus lets me know that I was His own

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus,
I've learned to trust in God.

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His Word.

I thank God for the mountains,
and I thank Him for the valleys,
I thank Him for the storms He brought me through.
For if I'd never had a problem,
I wouldn't know God could solve them,
I'd never know what faith in God could do.
