#BibleStudy Signs and Wonders – Miracles: Jesus Calms a Storm – Mark 4:35-41. 07-25-2021-- Discussion
I APOLOGIZE FOR THE SUCCINCTNESS OF TODAY'S POST. I THREW AWAY WHAT I THOUGHT WAS AN OLD PAGE OF NOTES ON SUNDAY. IT TURNS OUT THAT IT WAS SUNDAY'S NOTES. SO ALL YOU GET TODAY IS FROM MY MUCH LESS THAN INFALLIBLE MEMORY THIS WEEK.
Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus. The comments below are from our discussion this week.

Miracle #6 – Jesus Calms a Storm – Mark 4:35-41
Who’s in the other boats?
- Fishermen.
- People following Jesus.
How are they dealing with the storm?
- Probably scared to death.
How big is Lake Galilee? https://www.britannica.com/place/Sea-of-Galilee
- The lake has a surface area of 64 square miles. Its maximum depth, measured in the northeast, is 157 feet.
- Extending 13 miles from north to south and 7 miles from east to west, it is pear-shaped.
- Its surface elevation was long given as 686 feet below sea level, but for decades the annual water level generally has been 6.5 to 13 feet below the traditional level.
What’s around it?
- The landscape around Galilee has broad, fruitful valleys where farmers grow crops of wheat and corn, bananas, mangoes, hay, tomatoes, olives, plums, peaches, cherries, and almonds. The land and the climate are conducive to growth, which stands in contrast to the very arid land south of Jerusalem. Wild grapes and capers are easy to find here. The land and the people would not have had difficulty welcoming and supporting an itinerant preacher like Jesus and his followers.
- This large lake is the site of many Gospel stories, such as Jesus’ walking on the water, calming the storm, preaching from boats, and calling the disciples. It also provides the setting for many of his parables—he taught by drawing upon imagery from the natural world and work-life familiar to his listeners in this region, such as seeds, fish,
nets , sheep, and vineyards.
(The boats shown in this historical photo date from the 1800s, but roughly approximate the shape and size of fishing boats Jesus’ disciples might have used.)

What direction did most storms come from?
- Out of the Northeast and following the valley.
What would the disciples use to bail water from the boat?
- Hands.
- The baskets they used to collect leftover food after Jesus fed 5000 people.
The Ancient Galilee Boat, also known as the Jesus Boat, is an ancient fishing boat from the 1st century AD, discovered in 1986 on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The remains of the boat, 27 feet (8.27 meters) long, 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) wide and with a maximum preserved height of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters), first appeared during a drought, when the waters of the Sea (actually a great fresh-water lake) receded.[1] Other than the dating, there is no evidence connecting the boat to Jesus or his disciples. |
- Here's a link about the recovery (1986) of the boat described above. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Galilee_Boat
How does Ps 4:8 relate to Jesus sleeping through the storm?
- It's exactly what Jesus did.
- Reminds us not to give in to our fear but to trust in God.
Cushion? Why one cushion?
- All the boats of the time had one cushion for the helmsman.
Read Mark 5:31,
“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
6:37
But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
8:4.
His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
How do they relate to 4:38b?
The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
- These verses present a pattern of behavior by the disciples.
