Expressions of Faith: Spiritual Leadership

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;

Spiritual Leadership

Leadership of the spiritual kind comes from a spirit of voluntary obedience.

I'm not sure I understand what Peter means when he says "not because you must." That sounds like some of his audience were practicing obligatory leadership

Perhaps it's the "I'm the only one capable of being leader" mentality.

Dishonest gain was all too familiar—tax collection being a prime example. Shepherds are instructed to serve not subjugate those they lead.

Thank you, God, for those under my leadership. Help me to be a willing leader and eager to serve.
