Expressions of Faith. Eaten by Worms
21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Acts 12:21-23
King Herod was not a nice person.
The first six verses of Chapter 12 describe Peter’s imprisonment by the king. He assigns four elite teams of soldiers to guard Peter. Each of those quatrains was trained to defeat at least ten times their number.
In verses 7 through 18, an angel leads Peter to freedom.
Herod
- Orders the execution of all sixteen soldiers.
- Then he goes on a vacation.
I told you Heron was not a nice person.
In the verses immediately preceding today’s passage, Herod “negotiates” a peace treaty with Tyre and Sidon.
- The king gives a celebratory speech.
- After accepting heretical praise, God strikes Herod with an infestation of worms.
While Herod is serving as a worm smorgasbord, verse 24 describes the effects of his efforts to derail the spread of the Gospel.
24 But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
What better testimony to God’s power than that?
How are you helping the Word of God to spread and flourish?
