#Bible #Lesson What Christians Believe About Atonement

Atonement

  • Addresses the question, "Why did Christ die?"
  • It is reparation/reconciliation of sins - forgiveness.
  • Being in the right place relationship with God and humanity.

Sin

  • Sin separates from God and from other people.

  • John Calvin defined sin as "missing the mark." You tried but missed.
  • John Wesley defined sin as "a willful transgression against God."

Forgiveness
  • Forgiveness of sin is mandatory for a right relationship with God.
  • All people need their sins forgiven.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23
  • Forgiveness is given to all.
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.        2 Corinthians 5:14-21
  • Forgiveness is ours to give.
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.      Colossians 3:13
  • You are an ambassador of God's forgiveness in the world.
  • You should be constantly forgiving.
Mercy and justice often clash. Forgiveness isn't always easy. But Jesus said, "Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us." Luke 11:4

Forgiveness is marked and defined by LOVE  and LIFE.

  • God's LOVE moved Him to forgive you.
  • You don't LIVE for yourself. You LIVE for Christ!
  • Your life shouldn't be about you, it should be about Christ.
  • God's LOVE gives you LIFE, which you are to give to those around you.
  • Forgiveness has to do with life, not death.
  • Forgiveness provides life now, you don't need to wait for eternity!
The keys to the Kingdom of God are
  • Forgiveness - God to you and you to others
  • Love - God to you and you to yourself and others
  • Life - from God and lived for God and others
