#BibleStudy Thoughts on the Questions from James Ch 1 on 05-03-2020

For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.

This is Wednesday. What follows are bits and pieces of the discussion in class on the questions posted two days ago.

If you miss getting the questions on Mondays, I invite you to go back. Copy, and paste the questions from those posts into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions on your own. You can compare your thoughts to those of my class members each Wednesday. If your answers don’t match my class’s answers, that doesn’t make your answers wrong. If you like more information about what was said in class, email me at the address at the end of this post.

I hope you enjoy exploring this practical book along with us. Each Sunday's discussion ends at the last question in black print. Photos included are of the "whiteboard" list I generated during the discussion and are nothing but time savers for me.

Questions in this print were answered in previous weeks or not this week.

I invite you to check this blog site on Friday when my Expressions of Faith posts are from James. Here's last week's link's URL.

I also invite you back to these "Questions" blogs next week!

Chapter 1

Verses 19-27
What are we told “to DO or CONTINUE” and what “NOT to DO or STOP” by James in these verses?

What should we be quick to listen to?
  • God's Word.
  • My wife.

What two characteristics does James warn against that hinder a person from listening?
  • Anger (Verse 20)
  • Moral filth and Evil (Verse 21)

What is different about human anger compared to God's anger?
  • Human anger is not righteous.
  • God's righteous anger: you are angry without sinning.

“In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, (Ephesians 4:26)
  • Uncontrolled anger violates God's standard of conduct.
  • Anger is a God-given emotion and is not inherently bad.
  • Godly/Righteous anger is against evil, injustice, and sin.
  • God is slow to anger (Romans 12:19) Look at how long before God got angry with Sodom and Gomorrah's with sin and disobedience and with all human arrogance, sin, and disobedience before He flooded the earth.
  • God punishes sin and disobedience with hell.

What does the Bible have to say about humility and meekness that is opposite to the usual "worldly" descriptions of those terms?
Humility
Worldly
God
·   It’s misunderstood.
·   Considered weak
·   Often used as doormat or stepping stones by others.
·   Often taken advantage of

·   Humility is an attitude you choose.
·  Submit without grumbling.
·  Depend on others and put others first.
·  Don’t boast.
·  Everything I am/have is from God’s grace and other people.
·  It’s an act of worship.
·  Comes from God.
·  Part of the character of Christ.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.Romans 12:10
·  Leave exalting to God.
·  False humility is from self. True humility is God-centered.
Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. Colossians 12:18

·  C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity:
Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call "humble" nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
I Peter 5:5

Meekness
