#BibleStudy Thoughts on the Questions from James Ch 1-2 on 05-24-2020

For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.

This is Wednesday. What follows are bits and pieces of the discussion in class on the questions posted two days ago.

If you miss getting the questions on Mondays, I invite you to go back. Copy, and paste the questions from those posts into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions on your own. You can compare your thoughts to those of my class members each Wednesday. If your answers don’t match my class’s answers, that doesn’t make your answers wrong. If you like more information about what was said in class, email me at the address at the end of this post.

I hope you enjoy exploring this practical book along with us. Each Sunday's discussion ends at the last question in black print. Photos included are of the "whiteboard" list I generated during the discussion and are nothing but time savers for me.

Questions in this print were answered in previous weeks.

I invite you to check this blog site on Friday when my Expressions of Faith posts are from James. Here's last week's link's URL.

I also invite you back to these "Questions" blogs next week!

Chapter 1

Verses 19-27
What can do for the people listed in v17?
Visit them.
  • Provide for needs-helping wherever needed.
  • Be a friend and listener.
  • Call them on the phone.
  • Look for open doors.

What are some specific things we can DO as "doers of the Word"?
  • Pray for others.
  • Be involved in talking and listening.
  • Share needs.
  • Be there.
  • Obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
  • Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12
  • Reflect the light you have.
  • Share your testimony to encourage others.
  • LISTEN.
  • Ask open-ended questions.

What are three tests of true religion listed in vv26-27?
  1. Holding your tongue.
  2. Visiting the needy.
  3. Controlling yourself.
  • The Easy to Read version has "true worship," not "true religion" as many others. The Greek term for worship here is "fearing or worshiping. To tremble or be fearful."
  • Unstained means to avoid evil.
  • "If you have to think twice about an action, you really know what to do."
  • Walk in the Spirit.
  • "Be in the world not of the world." John 17 is Jesus talking about this concept.

Chapter 2
Verses 1-13
V1-13: What is the main point of this passage?
  • Don't show favoritism.
  • Be careful how your judge... taking people to "our own court."
  • Don't make assumptions... key items: a person's looks or behavior.
  • Show mercy.
  • This is often an ongoing struggle.
  • People don't live up to our expectations of perfection. (Verse 13)
  • Work on your own level of perfection.
  • Make MERCY, not judgment, your default setting.
  • Be intentional.
  • Love people like we often don't love ourselves. (A 21st Century take on verse 8.)
  • Beware of compassion fatigue: giving, giving, giving.
  • Forgiveness must be intentional.

WE GOT THIS FAR THIS WEEK.
