#BibleStudy Thoughts on the Questions from James Ch 1 on 06-07--2020

For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.

This is Wednesday. What follows are bits and pieces of the discussion in class on the questions posted two days ago.

If you miss getting the questions on Mondays, I invite you to go back. Copy, and paste the questions from those posts into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions on your own. You can compare your thoughts to those of my class members each Wednesday. If your answers don’t match my class’s answers, that doesn’t make your answers wrong. If you like more information about what was said in class, email me at the address at the end of this post.

I hope you enjoy exploring this practical book along with us. Each Sunday's discussion ends at the last question in black print. Photos included are of the "whiteboard" list I generated during the discussion and are nothing but time savers for me.

Questions in this print were answered in previous weeks.

I invite you to check this blog site on Friday when my Expressions of Faith posts are from James. Here's last week's link's URL.

I also invite you back to these "Questions" blogs next week!

Chapter 2
Verses 1-13

What is the "royal law" and why is it called that?
  • It is the Lord's command.

18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. (Leviticus 19:18)
See also Matthew 7:12 and John 15:12
  • Royal law is the supreme law of social relationships.
  • If everybody did this, people would get along. It leads to unity.
  • You must love yourself before you can love your neighbor.
Who is currently leading the attack against Christians/Christianity?

  • Originally it was Jewish leadership.
  • Those who think they are god.
  • Satan. His only way to hurt God is attacking Christians.
  • Middle Eastern countries except for Jordan, Israel, and Palestine.
  • What do attackers dow the God's truth? Biblical truth must guide us  until we love GOD --> Self --> Neighbors

Has much changed over the centuries?

  • Other countries are now sending missionaries to the USA.
  • Most current world governments make it hard to keep Christian beliefs and actions.
How did Jesus treat the poor?

  • He often used the poor as examples of faith, etc. The "widow's mite" (Mark 12:442-43)
  • A misconception is that the poor made unwise decisions leading to their plight. "There but for the grace of God go I."
  • Jesus preferred the poor and spent time with them.
  • The poor were willing to listen and change their lifestyle.
  • One of God's names is "Provider" (Jehovah-jireh).
  • The rich "don't need help," so they shut God out.
  • The poor know they always need God's help.

How can we model that?

  • It's easier to pay the tithe than to give our time.
  • Tithing isn't just giving money. There are ways to help the poor.
  • The only things you own are your time and your character.
  • It's up to you how you use your time.

WE GOT THIS FAR THIS WEEK.
V8-13: Why does breaking one law make us guilty of breaking the whole thing?

Does James 2:12-13 contradict the idea that believers will be judged by mercy and grace rather than strict justice and the Law?

What does James say will happen to those who fail to show mercy on the needy?

V14-26: Compare James, John, Paul and Jesus sayings about faith.
James
Paul
John
Jesus

Does Paul disagree with James in Romans 13:8-10, Gal 5:22-25, and Phil 2:12-13?
