#BibleStudy Expressions of Faith (with applications). Slaves to Fear

The suggested timeline for each Bible study in this series is one week.
Friday

Read the entire section or chapter of Hebrews that includes the printed verses.

Read the Bible study bullet points and the Scripture immediately following.

Then Express Your Faith this Week by completing the three tasks.
  • Pray every day. There is a suggestion for how to focus your prayers.
  • Think. An idea or two designed to get you thinking about Scripture.
  • Do. An activity to complete. Ranging from making a list to drawing a picture, this is will help you apply what you’ve been thinking. You might want to work on this on days 3-7. Each “Do” is downloadable for you to print and write on.

Days 2-7
Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3. You don’t have to

I taught high school and college classes full-time for thirty-nine years. I know full well that some of you independent souls will not follow the above-recommended process.
If you’re one of those, chances are you’ll never read this bullet point.

Ultimately, how you complete this Bible study book is less important than completing it. Nevertheless, I hope you’ll give the recommended process a try before you decide not to follow it.
You might be asking, “What’s with the bullet points?” Then, again, you might not be asking that. Whether you are asking or not, here’s the reason.
Each bullet point focuses on a single idea in the daily Bible study.
Most are one sentence long.
You’re more likely to read the entire bulleted list than you are to read two full paragraphs.

14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.
 Hebrew 2:14-16

·     Verse 14 and verse 16 are bookends of the “being held in slavery by their fear” concept.
·     Fear is a powerful motivator.
·     The motivation is commonly negative. Fear can
§  freeze the thoughts and actions of the fearful one.
§  spur the fearful one to reckless action
·     Fear is an external motivator.
·     Like all external motivators, fear only motivates
§  when conditions are right.
o  when conditions are wrong is more appropriate.
§  as long as the situation is fearful.
·     Christ became human to help humanity.
·     Christ died, so His death and resurrection would
§  Defeat the power of him who holds the power of death, that is Satan.
§  Free those who were [are] held in slavery by their fear of death.
God removes fear’s motivation in those who believe
through Christ’s resources.
Express Your Faith this Week
Pray every day. Ask God to help you overcome your fears and for peace for others as they live with a variety of fears in today’s world.
Think. Why is it mandatory that Christ share humanity with us?
2) Why did Christ have to die like we humans do?
Do. Write a thank-you note to Jesus for living and dying for you, so you can live without fear of dying. The note might be a paragraph, a poem, or a song.
