#BibleStudy Thoughts on Study Questions from James Ch 5 on 09/06/2020
For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.
This is Wednesday. What follows are bits and pieces of the discussion in class on the questions posted two days ago.
If you miss getting the questions on Mondays, I invite you to go back. Copy, and paste the questions from those posts into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions on your own. You can compare your thoughts to those of my class members each Wednesday. If your answers don’t match my class’s answers, that doesn’t make your answers wrong. If you like more information about what was said in class, email me at the address at the end of this post.
I hope you enjoy exploring this practical book along with us. Each Sunday's discussion ends at the last question in black print. Photos included are of the "whiteboard" list I generated during the discussion and are nothing but time savers for me.
Questions in this print were answered in previous weeks.
I invite you to check this blog site on Friday when my Expressions of Faith posts are from James. Here's last week's link's URL.
You’re also invited back to these "Questions" blogs next week!
Chapter 5
Verses 1-6
What about verse 5b, does he mean physical murder?
- This refers to judging another person.
Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!
you see me and test my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!
Jeremiah 12:3
The rich think they are heaping up treasure but really only heap up wrath. What are the sins of the rich?
- "More, more, more, and more stuff."
- Focus on "me" [self]
- Wrong priorities.
- Worship stuff, not God.
- Didn't care about their workers.
- Their concern is wealth, not people.
- Needed to share with others like Jesus did.
- Neglected the needy.
- Their sins are the same as the sins of the poor. EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING THEY CAN SHARE.
How can someone be a "good" rich person?
- J. C. Penny did not lay off a single employee during the depression and tithed his income. He used his money to help people.
- It's not your money. It's from God!
- Stewardship.
- Riches are not only material things. We can share experience, time, a shoulder to cry on, Amor Ministries, living in senior housing and helping people living there, you are blessed by your sharing, PLNU students and Point Loma High School students are doing volunteer free food and medicine deliveries around the schools, helping around the church, helping people with their computers, sharing your knowledge with a good spirit.
Verses 7-11
PATIENCE. Definition?
- Google Definition: the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.
- "It's what I don't have."
- A discipline learned through experience.
- "Hurry up and wait."
- Modeling is important.
- Impatience is physically detrimental.
What does James mean by patience in this section?
- The second coming.
- Like farmers
- Control your temper when you are mistreated because the judgment of God is at hand.
- Not different from "anticipation."
- Jesus will come "in His time."
Jesus is not recorded as having used this word "patience" by any of the Gospel writers. Turn in your concordance and let's check out some of the references on this topic.
- There is only one in the Old Testament (depending on the translation used).
Proverbs 19:11:
11 A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.
- These are New Testament locations (depending on the translation used).
1 Corinthians 13:4
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
Hebrews 6:12
12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
2 Peter 3:15
15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
1 Timothy 1:16
16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.
This verse describes patience.
Philippians 4:6
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
This verse uses a pseudonym for patience.
Isaiah 40:31
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
WE GOT THIS FAR THIS WEEK.
