#BibleStudy Thoughts on Study Questions from James Ch 5 on 09/13/2020

For as many Sundays as needed, my Sunday school class will explore the context and content of the practical content of the Letter from James.

This is Wednesday. What follows are bits and pieces of the discussion in class on the questions posted two days ago.

If you miss getting the questions on Mondays, I invite you to go back. Copy, and paste the questions from those posts into a word.docx and fill in blanks or answer questions on your own. You can compare your thoughts to those of my class members each Wednesday. If your answers don’t match my class’s answers, that doesn’t make your answers wrong. If you like more information about what was said in class, email me at the address at the end of this post.

I hope you enjoy exploring this practical book along with us. Each Sunday's discussion ends at the last question in black print. Photos included are of the "whiteboard" list I generated during the discussion and are nothing but time savers for me.

Questions in this print were answered in previous weeks.

I invite you to check this blog site on Friday when my Expressions of Faith posts are from James. Here's last week's link's URL.

You’re also invited back to these "Questions" blogs next week!

Chapter 5
Verses 7-11
Why would Jesus (or those who recorded his words) not refer to patience?
  • Jesus uses synonyms like endures.

What is the most common reason for encouraging patience in the Scriptures?
  • Jesus’ second coming.

What's the difference between Job's description in verse 11, and James’s description in verse 10?
  • Verse 10 uses patience.
  • Verse 11 uses perseverance/endure
  • Some modern-day Jobs in our church were listed.

10-11 Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. What a gift life is to those who stay the course! You’ve heard, of course, of Job’s staying power, and you know how God brought it all together for him at the end. That’s because God cares, cares right down to the last detail. James 5:10-11 (MSG)

What example is given here?
  • Patience, endurance, encouragement.
  • The focus shifts from the rich to the oppressed.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

What is inherent in the patience of a farmer (what do they believe)?
  • Dependence on the weather for a good harvest.
  • Farmers don’t take the growing season off.
  • Farmers can’t just plant the seeds and leave the farm. You might be the watering source for someone in your life.
  • Your mind is like soil. You have limited control over what goes in, but you must emphasize what you want to keep.

11 Yet we hear that some of you are living in laziness, refusing to work, and wasting your time in gossiping. 12 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we appeal to such people—we command them—to quiet down, get to work, and earn their own living. 13 And to the rest of you I say, dear brothers, never be tired of doing right.

2 Thessalonians 3:12-14 (Living Bible)

What is the significance of the word "then" in v7?
  • It refers to other verses in this section.
  • It’s going to happen. [See the answers above.]

What is the significance of the term "stand firm" in v8?
  • Study, study, study.
  • Establish your heart.
  • Humanity is not patient inherently, but it’s worth it in the end!
  • The second wind of a marathon runner is like patience to a Christian.
  • Live by faith and be rewarded in the future.
  • Share your faith regardless of the response it gets. Don’t plan on seeing the results of your sowing the Word.

WE GOT THIS FAR THIS WEEK.
