Miracle #2 – Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit – Mark 1:21-28

he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. The teachers of the Law were men schooled in the interpretation of the Law and were responsible for helping the people in general understand and apply the Law to their situations. Their authority lay in their ability to quote the teachings of previous rabbis on the subject at hand. In contrast, Jesus taught directly. An example is seen in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus counters traditional teaching with his repeated statement "But I tell you ... " without the use of quotes from earlier rabbis to back him up. (S&W – pp18-19)

Find 6 places in the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus defied the practice described above.

1.   5:20. More righteous than the Law.

2.   5:21-22. Don’t be angry with other people. Don’t insult others: calling someone a fool. Be slow to anger, period.

3.   5:27. Don’t even lust for a partner.

4.   5:31-32. Divorce as adultery.

5.   5:38. Turn the other cheek.

6.   5:39. Don’t make oaths or vow to do something.

7.   5:43-44. Love enemies, and pray for your persecutors.

What was the Teachers’ of the Law position on each of those?

1.   Do as I say. Follow the law.

2.   Don’t commit murder.

3.   Don’t commit adultery

4.   Dissolve a marriage with a certificate of divorce.

5.   Eye for an Eye.

6.   Don’t break an oath or vow.

7.   Love your neighbors. Hate your enemies.

Find 5-6 examples of evil spirit activity. Find two from the OT for extra credit. Look for a Cause, Evidence, and an Outcome.

Genesis 3:4-6. Eve eats fruit and convinces Adam to do the same.

1 Samuel. King Saul is taken over by an evil spirit.

Matthew 12:22. Spirits in a man are cast into pigs.

Matthew 4. Temptation of Jesus by Satan.

Mark 16: Disciples will drive out demons.

Mark 3:27+. A person’s spirits are cleaned out, but return when the person isn’t filled with God’s spirit.
