Miracle #2 – Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit – Mark 1:21-28
Based only on this miracle:
What about Jesus amazes you?
- His confident authority.
- Demons know who He is, but humans don’t get it.
- It’s like Jesus went into the lion’s den.
What about Jesus amazes Jews in the synagogue?
- That He knew anything.
- He cast out the demon.
- He taught differently than other speakers—He didn’t refer to others’ opinions or interpretations of Scripture.
According to a note I read, Mark 1:15 is a summary of the few teaching points Mark presents in his Gospel. Write your own summary of Jesus's teaching based on what you know about His teaching.
- The Kingdom is near, He was the Messiah.
- Repent. Think of sacrifices they did and they still had to repent.
- Repent means to turn around and go the other way. It requires change, and it includes saying “I’m sorry” if necessary.
- Surrendering to God is an individual decision.
Ezekiel 18:30 - New International Version
30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.
- Believe the Good news.
27-28 Everyone there was spellbound, buzzing with curiosity. “What’s going on here? A new teaching that does what it says? He shuts up defiling, demonic spirits and tells them to get lost!” News of this traveled fast and was soon all over Galilee. (MSG)
he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. The teachers of the Law were men schooled in the interpretation of the Law and were responsible for helping the people in general understand and apply the Law to their situations. Their authority lay in their ability to quote the teachings of previous rabbis on the subject at hand. In contrast, Jesus taught directly. An example is seen in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus counters traditional teaching with his repeated statement "But I tell you ... " without the use of quotes from earlier rabbis to back him up. (S&W – pp18-19)
