Miracle #2 – Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit – Mark 1:21-28

Overall impression?

  • Jesus saw a need and fixed it.
  • Jesus knew evil when He saw it.
  • The demon realized Jesus was a threat.
  • The bystanders were amazed/astonished by Jesus’s authority.

Find four “other” demonic miracles you find and list the Scripture references:

  • Matthew 9:32-34 mute man speaks
  • Mark 5:1-20 the Legion of Demons
  • Mark 7:24-30 & Matthew 15:21-28 healing a Canaanite woman's daughter

Key Word #1 and Why.

  • Authority: Jesus was different from other rabbis

Key Word #2 and Why.

  • Amazed: there’s a different situation and presentation after the demon leaves.

Compare one of the 4 exorcisms you found to this one.

We chose Mark 5:1-20

Commentary in the book says that “such spirits were Satan’s legions who joined with him in his revolt against God.

  • In general, when doing miracles, Jesus tells Jews not to tell anyone but does not give that instruction to gentiles.
  • In general, demons are loud.
  • This miracle was not in Jewish territory.
  • The people were amazed.
  • Demons knew Jesus was The Son of God.
  • These demons call on God for help.

What was the role of the synagogue in Christ’s time?

  • It was a meeting place, usually someone’s home.
  • It was both a church for men and a school for boys. Mother’s taught their daughters.
  • You listened to a rabbi or other speaker. There was no pastor. The usual format was to quote scripture and cite opinions of the text.
  • One saying used to support the synagogues was “an ignorant man cannot be truly pious.”

Why is it significant that Jesus “taught with authority” when speaking in the synagogue?

  • It distinguished him from other rabbis.
  • He didn’t tell what others said or thought, but like HE knew.
