Miracle #1 – Water into Wine – John 2:1-11
Why were there giant empty jars “nearby?”
- They held water that was removed and used for ceremonial cleansing rituals.
- Jars this size (20-30 gallons) were cut from a single stone and were very expensive.
- These were used repeatedly, while pottery jars were broken in pieces after a single use, and were dedicated to purity.
- They were not empty. The servants had only to top-off the jars.
- Jars of this size and cost suggest the owner belonged to a priestly family.
Is the wine in this miracle the same kind of wine bottled today?
- No.
- While it was fermented, it was more like vinegar than what is considered wine today.
Pretend you’re one of Jesus’ disciples and describe your reaction to this miracle.
- Maybe they didn’t see the miracle, only the end product.
Who’s this “master of the banquet?”
- Some translations use the term “headwaiter.”
- One translation uses “Governor of the area.” If this is the case, he was there to validate the wedding.
Why was it common to serve the choice wine first?
- Drunken people can’t taste the difference between good wine and bad wine.
- After some wine, the palate isn’t as sharp.
- One commentary suggested that the bride and groom might have used the leftover of Jesus’ wine as part of their dowry and sold it.
Why does John use the term “miraculous sign” instead of just “miracles.”
- Because it was “pretty awesome!”
- John uses the term to emphasize the significance of Jesus’ actions and the messianic symbols associated with Him.
List examples of how Jesus used wedding illustrations in his ministry.
- The King’s son’s wedding banquet where the servants invite strangers to fill the room. (Matthew 22)
- The 10 Virgins (Matthew 25)
The final sentence in v11 is significant. Why?
- The disciples believed He was the Messiah and put their faith in Him.
