Miracle #5 – Feeding 5000 People – Mark 6:30-44

What caused all four Gospel writers to include this miracle?

  • The disciples talked about it a lot.
  • They didn’t really understand what Jesus was saying.
  • They were all there. (In fairness, the person who said this retracted it after he remembered that Luke wasn’t a disciple or even a Jew.)

What does Jesus say to the disciples in 6:31?

Come ye apart. (Let’s get away.)

How would you feel if thousands of people were waiting when you arrived at the destination? Explain.

  1. Overwhelmed.
  2. Infringed upon.
  3. Frustrated.
  4. Jesus had compassion for the crowd.

We talked about sheep for a bit and realized Isaiah 52:6 was not flattering humans when he said, “All we, like sheep, have gone astray.”

  • Sheep are NOT smart.
  • If a sheep’s tail is not bobbed, the sheep might lay down and not be able to get up because it’s laying on its own tail.
  • Without help from a shepherd, they will probably die if they fall into a stream or lake because their wool absorbs too much water for them to swim.

List all the emotions/attitudes you can imagine the disciples had when told to “feed them.”

  • Really?
  • Unwelcomed surprise.
  • Wondering why.
  • Irritated.

Read Num 27:15-17, Ezek 34:11-15, Ps 23:2. What do these OT passages have to do with this miracle and Jesus?

  • Numbers: Caring for sheep.
  • Ezekiel: The importance of the shepherd.
  • Psalm: Jesus is our shepherd.
  • A shepherd and his/her sheep is a healthy example of God’s leadership.

Make a connection between this miracle and the “Lord’s Supper.”

  • Christ broke the bread.
  • Jesus thanked God for the bread/wine before they ate/drank.

BONUS THOUGHT:

  • When you give back to God, God can/will bless the process.
