#ChristianDiscipline. Timeless Truths. Silence and Solitude
Much of the recent silence and solitude was forced upon people around the world. In general, humans don't like being forced to do much of anything. Forced silence and solitude are no exceptions.
But, what about silence and solitude you choose?
Huh?
- I know people who awaken to music, turn on a radio or stream audio before/during/after breakfast, drive with music playing, etc.
- Some churches still have periods of silence in their services.
- Many/Most churches have music playing when congregants enter, during most of the worship time, as the background to all public prayers, and as part of the dismissal at the end of each service.
I prefer silence over background sound most of the time.
Solitude is often hard to find, too.
Online communications might have replaced many face-to-face contacts, but they are not times of solitude.
Children to care for.
Spouses/Significant others require time investments to avoid misunderstandings and/or feelings of moving apart.
Most gyms have music playing during workouts.
I prefer periods of silence every day. Not all day, but part of every day.
So, I offer the following. I'm not sure where it came from, but it's based on Richard Foster's book of the same title, and I invite you to try more intentional solitude and silence in the weeks ahead.
