#BibleLesson Timeless Truths. Rediscovering Jesus--The Miracle Worker. The second of a three-part series.
26 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. 27 But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man[a] can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
John 6:26-27 (New Living Translation)
A MIRACLE is overturning the order of things.
We’ll look and the meaning and motives of miracles.
INTRODUCTION
One aspect of Jesus’ ministry that is impossible to ignore: the many miracles he performed during his time on earth. There are 64 different miracles recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Miracles weren't merely a “sometimes event,” they were a frequent occurrence.
As you read the gospels you can't help but wonder
What did the miracles mean in Jesus’ day?
And
Does God still perform miracles today?
- In Hebrews 13 eight we are told that Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever.
- With that in mind let's see if we can discover how Jesus’ miracle ministry is available for you in 2021.
FIVE OBSERVATIONS ABOUT JESUS’ MINISTRY OF MIRACLES
Miracles were not advertisements.
Often those healed were encouraged to be quiet.
A. Jesus never performed miracles to draw a crowd.
- Jesus wanted his ministry to build people up not use people to build up His ministry.
B. Jesus healed people in spite of the inevitable risk involved.
John 2:23-25 (Christ knew human nature)
John 11:40-44 (Lazarus)
- Doing miracles could have been the focus of Jesus’ ministry.
- Many people focus on what's in it for them when looking for a place to follow Christ.
- In John chapter five religious leaders opposed Jesus for healing on the Sabbath. Christ knew the risks, but He did the miracles anyway.
C. Jesus healed people to teach a spiritual truth.
Mark 2:5,8-10 (The man lowered through the roof)
Mark 3:4-5 (The man with the shriveled hand)
- Any doctrine that prevents you from doing good when you should is not good doctrine.
D. Jesus healed people because he cares about people.
Matthew 14:14, 15:32, 20:34)
(Compassion of the crowd)
- Jesus cares about people today as much as he did in New Testament times.
E. Jesus often healed people in response to their faith.
Matthew 8:13, 9:29; Mark 5:34, 11:23; Luke 17:19
All these focus on FAITH.
- Your problems are not caused by your lack of faith, but they can be overcome by your faith.
- Having faith doesn't give you the right end to dictate to God what should happen.
- Faith gives you the mechanisms you need to successfully overcome any circumstance.
- All miracles have a relatively short lifespan; They are not meant to last forever (John 6:27).
CONCLUSION
- The miracle is just the beginning, not the climax.
- What matters most is what happens next, as you continue your journey with Jesus and seek his will.
Miracles today
- Bring your needs to Jesus.
- He will respond to the request and your faith.
- Trust him to give you the power to conquer whatever you face according to His will.
- Defeat a problem by becoming tougher than the problem.
What's your greatest GREED ≠ equal to your greatest NEED.
