Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus. The comments below are from our discussion this week.

Miracle #7 – Healing a Man Possessed by Many Demons – Mark 1:1-20

How long did Legion remain demon-free? List ideas linked to both before and after his miracle.

  • Before: Not long. Who knows how many to begin with.
  • After: It depends on how he lives. Tradition links him to evangelism in the region after Pentecost.

Describe a time when a vacation turned into something unpleasant or unexpected.

  • One shared an auto accident where her whole family “should have died.”
  • Another shared about her daughter’s experience with the lingering effects of using the Ouija board.

Horror movies often include demonic possession. Comment.

  • This is a huge issue.
  • Demons are still glorified.
  • Today’s movies are more graphic than earlier films.
  • Society glorifies horror.

Based only on Mark’s description, what are the goals of demons possessing someone?

  • Torture people.
  • Destroy God’s creation.
  • Demon-possessed people don’t think for themselves.

Describe the most dramatic change you’ve witnessed in someone after accepting Christ?

  • Zealous witness for Christ.
  • Joyful and more positive.
  • Stopped abusing alcohol.
  • Humility and a willingness to serve as needed.
  • Change of lifestyle from self-centered to helping the needy.

Contrast the pigs’ reaction to the demon-possessed man’s reaction?

  • The man wanted to go with Jesus – The demons wanted to go with pigs.
  • The man did what Jesus told him. Again, historians record his role in building strong churches in the Decapolis, the region where this miracle occurred.

BONUS THOUGHTS THIS WEEK

Two ideas surfaced this week.

What do demons do when they aren’t possessing someone?

  • Recruiting souls to serve Satan.
  • Causing “little annoyances” in people’s day-to-day life and deflect thinking away from God.

Why did the demons want to stay in that region?

  • I don’t know why I didn’t record any answers.
