Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus.
Below are highlights from this week’s class discussion.
Miracle #9 – Jesus Walks on Water – Matthew 14:22-36
Compare this event’s description in Matthew, Mark, and John. List similarities and differences.
Similarities
- Jesus ends up in the boat.
Differences
- In John and Mark, Jesus stays in the boat.
- In Mark, Jesus intended to walk past them. He later calls them clueless. Mark comments on their lack of understanding as the result of a stubborn heart.
- In John, the term ghost isn’t used. Records Jesus going to the mountains to escape the crowd after feeding the 5000.
- Jesus and the disciples end up in Capernaum, according to John, but in Gennesaret in Matthew and Mark.
What is Jesus doing just before this miracle?
- Praying. He sent the disciples ahead of him on the boat.
Look back at the calming of the storm miracle. What in the descriptions of this miracle suggest they are the same storm?
- Jesus calms the waves and wind.
What differs?
- Jesus starts in the boat in the first storm.
What and when is “the fourth watch?”
- Between 2-6 a.m.
How long might the disciples have been in this boat by then?
- If they left before dark, they could have been in the boat between 6-10 hours.
Why is Luke the only Gospel not to report walking on water?
- Because of his audience (Gentiles), Luke shied away from some topics.
What’s the significance of the disciple thinking a ghost is coming toward them?
- People don’t walk on water. This must be a ghost!
- It’s hard to see at night in a boat during a storm. In the dark, swirling mist, most of the non-sailors would have explained what they saw as a ghost.
