#BibleStudy Expressions of Faith. Convenience. Acts 24
25 As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”
Acts 24:25
I’m not sure of the exact date that convenience became a by-word in America.
- I remember certain stores were “open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays for your convenience.”
- All other stores closed at 5:00.
In 21st-century America, convenience is essential to business success.
- I’ve seen people drive around parking lots close to the entrance to their reason for being in that lot waiting for a car to leave so they wouldn’t have to park twenty-five yards further from the store in the parking lot.
Acts 24:25 describes an interaction between Paul and Felix.
- Paul’s focus is on Godly aspects of life and death.
- What Luke relates as fear in Felix was the most likely conviction of his sinful life.
- In what he hopes will end Paul’s sermon, he dismisses Paul and adds,
“When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”
The chapter ends with what sounds like a promising action by Felix.
At the same time, he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him. (24:26)
However, notice that Felix calls for Paul hoping for a bribe, not salvation.
27 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison. (24:27)
Based on verse 27, it seems like Felix never found a convenient time to confess and repent.
Now is the most convenient time you have to become a Christian you are guaranteed.
If you are unsure of your salvation status, God is waiting “for your convenience.”
