#BibleStudy Signs and Wonders – Miracle # 12 – “The Withered Fig Tree” - Mark 11-12-25. 05-08-2022 - DISCUSSION

  • Next week will be the start of the last Miracle in this series.
  • We will most likely start a study of Colossians by mid-June.
  • If you're interested in the complete set of questions before we start, email me at the address in the signature.

How/Why is the relationship between the chief priests and the teachers of the law changing at the time of this event?

  • Jesus was an intimidating figure of opposition to their legalistic approach to God.
  • There was a power struggle between the two groups.

Why did Jesus and the disciples “go out of the city” of Jerusalem?

  • To check the fig tree. 😉
  • It was Passover and there were no rooms for them.

What does the fig tree represent in Jesus’ interactions with it?

  • Judgment of Israel.

How might the fig leaves and the magnificence of the Temple relate to Jesus’ speech and actions?

  • Both are useless without reducing fruit.
  • Beautiful on the outside... NOTHING inside.

What happens to the Temple in AD 70 that makes this comparison easier to accept?

  • It was destroyed by the Romans in AD70. God gave the Jews one generation to get their act together.
  • God judges nations for their spiritual barrenness.  Matthew 3:10: The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

What is Mark’s purpose for including vv22-26?

  • It's part of "The Lord's Prayer."
  • You must believe.
  • Forgiveness is required both horizontally and vertically.

Why can’t vv23-24 be taken literally?

  • Magic?

What is the real point of these verses?

  • Verse 24. Have faith when praying, believing that God hears your prayer.
  • Look for people that need salvation like Jesus did.

What are obstacles Christians must overcome through prayer?

  • Staying awake.
  • Doubt.
  • Others misunderstanding.

Look again at the map of the Temple and Jerusalem. Which mountain might Jesus have pointed to?

  • Mount of Olives.

Matthew 6:12-14 sounds a bit like an invitation to barter with God. Thoughts?

  • Repetition breeds understanding.

What’s YOUR takeaway from v25?

  • We don't always stand to pray.
  • Standing helps keep you awake and focused.
  • If you don't forget, God cannot forgive.
