#BibleStudy Signs and Wonders – Miracle # 13 – “Great Catch of Fish” -  John 21:1-14. 05-29-2022 DISCUSSION

THIS IS THE LAST POST ABOUT MIRACLES OF JESUS. NEXT WEEK BEGINS A STUDY OF COLOSSIANS.

Why would fishermen on the sea of Galilee carry torches when they fished at night?

  • To attract bugs and draw fish to the surface.
  • To see what they were doing.
  • To not get rammed by another boat.

How do Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 15:40-42 help explain why they didn't recognize Jesus?

  • Other appearances by Jesus after the resurrection suggest there was a difference between earthly and heavenly body forms. (Road to Emmaus, Women in the Garden)

Who is “the disciple whom Jesus loved?”

  • John. He uses that term instead of his name in this book.

Where else was a fire described like this?

  • While Jesus is on trial.

Is the term "burning coals" used anywhere else in the NT?

Romans 12:20 -

On the contrary

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Significance?

  • Peter BETRAYED Jesus and soon will be RESTORED.

How significant is the number of fish caught: 153?

  • None at all.

Where else in John is the question, “Who are you?” – or something similar – asked of Jesus?

  • Who? Pilot at Jesus's trial. Mary in the garden.
  • Why? To hear Jesus' title from Jesus. Because she thought Jesus was a gardener.

Why is Jesus serving breakfast significant?

  • "Feed my sheep."
  • An example of serving others.
  • Jesus meets our immediate needs.

Where are the words in 21:13 used in the NT?

  • Kind of at The Last Supper.

Think back to another fish/bread miracle. How do they compare with this fish/bread non-miracle?

  • Feeding 4000 and 5000. Similar purpose superficially (feed the hungry). This is more of an example for the disciples' future.

Any final thoughts about this whole series?

  • Each miracle reminds us of our humanity.

THE END OF THIS SERIES.
