#BibleStudy Signs and Wonders – Miracle # 13 – “Great Catch of Fish” - John 21:1-14. 05-15-2022 - DISCUSSION

OVERALL IMPRESSION

  • When Jesus first met at least four of these men, they were fishermen.
  • Jesus knew they would relate to "not catch."
  • Do what Jesus says because He knows things.

John includes only eight miracles in his Gospel. Six of the miracles are unique to John. Why did he include this fish story when no other Gospel writer did?

  • It left a lasting impression because he was one of those present.
  • Jesus was eating food. He was not a ghost.
  • To demonstrate the humanity of the disciples.

John Ch 20 reads like the end of the Gospel. Rethink your answer to the first question on this page.

  • The nets didn't rip this time.

What’s a question you have about this story?

  • Why didn't Jesus reveal it was Him?

Why did the disciples go to Peter’s home turf after the resurrection?

  • They were afraid of the Romans.
  • Time to think and take it all in.
  • Security in numbers.

Luke 5:1-11 is also a fish story. Compare it with this one.

  • Similar: Net fishing
  • Different: Two boats.

How might the "repeat" of this miracle affect Peter?

  • Not a lot at first--he jumps right into the water after putting on a cloak.
  • He does take all he needs from the boat because he isn't going back to being a fisherman again.

List as many post-resurrection appearances as you can find. Those listed are not necessarily in chronological order.

  1. Mary in the garden.
  2. Othe women in the garden.
  3. Without Thomas.
  4. With Thomas.
  5. On the road to Emmaus.
  6. This one.
  7. The Ascension.

Why did Jesus provide the fish and then make breakfast for the disciples?

  • It was typical of his servent's attitude (foot washing)
  • He knew what they needed.
  • The monetary value of 153 fish was significant.
  • The fish and bread given by Jesus are parallel to communion.
