Thoughts on Hebrews Questions from 6/25

HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS/THOUGHTS

This past Monday, I posted questions that were discussed the day before in my Sunday School Life GroupI encourage you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts before checking what “we” said.

These questions were discussed in my Life Group Sunday. Samples of the group's "answers" are posted below each question.

Keep this in mind as we go through the study:

"Religion" is a group responsibility to Jews but an individual responsibility to Christians.

"It is clear that while there is continuity between the revelation mediated by the prophets and that reflected and refracted in Jesus, yet there is radical discontinuity as well. Between all who came before and Jesus is an infinite difference.” Adult Bible Fellowship Study Book, 2002

This note was in one of my students' Study Bibles.
It's something to keep in mind as we continue on through this series of lessons.

In the Old Testament: Israelites followed the law.

In the New Testament: We come to Jesus, follow Jesus, and obey Jesus.

Questions/Thoughts start here.
Hebrews 2
Vv 5-18

Why is it mandatory that: 1) Christ share humanity with us? 2) He die?
Jesus had be 100% human to be an acceptable sacrifice.
He had to die to show His power is superior to Satan's by rising.
Ultimately, His goal is to restore humanity to God's intended state.

How did Christ free those held in slavery to fear of death?
By dying on the cross.
We must repent and obey to get rid of this fear.
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:15
Christ's crucifixion/death is modeled after the Roman treatment of vanquished foes. His return from hell provides us with a pathway to victory.
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15
The spirit of adoption frees us from the fear of death.

What’s important about v16?
I'm glad I'm not an angel. Christ came for us!
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
2Timothy 1:7

What three things do we learn about Christ in v17?
1. He was fully human. We are made in God's image, but Christ was made in our likeness. Jesus was in the same sinless state of Adam and Eve.
2. He is our High Priest. Under the law, only the H.P. had direct access to God--and only once each year.

John Wesley implemented an annual "Covenant Service." It was a time for all to review their commitment. Humans are inclined to become spiritally lazy--this was a time to ask forgiveness for unknown sins.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:9-17
We are royal people, part of the priesthood, with Christ as our High Priest.
We have priestly duties--"Think like a priest"--and involved in--be part of--the world.
3. He made atonement--full payment--for us and turned away God's anger by offering Himself as our eternal sacrifice.

What gives Christ credibility concerning temptation?
He was tempted but did not sin.
He suffered when He was tempted like we do.
He did not yield to temptation--we can do that, too!
He helps those being tempted.
