Thoughts on Hebrews Questions from June 4

HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS/THOUGHTS

This past Monday, I posted questions that were discussed the day before in my Sunday School Life Group. I encourage you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts before checking what “we” said.

These questions were discussed in my Life Group Sunday. Samples of the group's "answers" are posted below each question.

Keep this in mind as we go through the study:

"Religion" is a group responsibility to Jews but an individual responsibility to Christians.

One new thought from last week that was posted as a blog comment. I like what the Adult Bible Fellowship Study Book dated 2002 has to say: "It is clear that while there is continuity between the revelation mediated by the prophets and that reflected and refracted in Jesus, yet there is radical discontinuity as well. Between all who came before and Jesus is an infinite difference.”

Hebrews 2
Vv 1-4

These verses include the first of 5 warnings throughout this book. Keep track! We didn't get to the warning this week. We'll start there next Sunday.

1.  Our will causes drifting, not God’s will. Apathy. Out of control = drifting. Denial causes drifting. Cutting the anchor chain or the tether allows drifting.
PREVENTION. Anchor/Tether = the Gospel.

From a Study Bible. Click for the link to Carson's book.

2. Angels delivered the Ten Commandments.

3. Verse 2 ends with the word “reward” in KJV, “punishment in the NIV, and “penalty” in the NASB. The effects are not only in “eternity.” Effects: a) living outside of Christ in your life; b) no peace, joy, or satisfaction; c) it prohibits a positive life in Christ. GREAT SALVATION – Gospel is greater that the Mosaic Law. Escape punishment and retribution.

4. “Testified” refers to the message of salvation. The wording indicates that the author never heard Jesus speak.

This is the list generated by my class. None of the lists is complete, so you probably found other correct responses. We agreed that "signs" were more covenant/memorial related and "wonders" were more practical or something needed.
Neither of these were available during class time.

5. Humans need proof of things or we tend to drift. Doubt happens when you don’t pay attention to God’s Word. What these verses are talking about is God’s will, not the will of angels
