Thoughts on Hebrews Study Questions from 9/3

HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS

My Sunday School Life Group is studying Hebrews. Every Monday, I post questions that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I invite you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts.

On Wednesdays, I post some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider and compare with your thoughts.

These questions were discussed in my Life Group yesterday. Take time to reflect on them. I'll post thoughts from the class discussion on We

Chapter 5
Vv 1-14

V14. Constant use of what?
Senses. God's Word. Solid food. Teachings about righteousness.

Chapter 6
Vv 1-12

List the six elementary teachings in vv1-2.

Repentance. An uncommon concept in other religions.
Resurrection. Not reincarnation or ghostly hauntings.
Eternal Judgment. Not emphasized in other religions if it was in them.
Baptism. An outward demonstration of a life-changing event. Often performed on the same day as repentance in the early church.
Laying on of Hands. A spiritual act reminding Christians of Christ's healing power.
Faith in God. Not faith in works as in other religions.
Maturity is significantly missing from this list.

How would you fulfill v3 if “God permitted” it?
Move to maturity
Only God can open hearts and minds--Free will
God permits those who choose.
A footnote in the New King James refers to Genesis 1:26 where God uses the phrase "Let Us..." as an alternate reading to "And this we will do if God permits." "And let us do this if God permits," indicating the significance of the act.

Vv4-6 have many interpretations. Get your footnotes ready. It’s all one sentence in early editions of the NIV.

List the terms describing the “lost” in these verses.
Growing away from God. Discouraged by circumstances. Not paying attention. Turning from the known way. Distracted by life.
This is the first of six warnings against "lostness" in Hebrews.
