THOUGHTS ON HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS
My Sunday School Life Group is studying Hebrews. Every Monday, I post questions that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I invite you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts.
On Wednesdays, I post some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider and compare with your thoughts.
These questions were discussed in my Life Group Monday. This post presents thoughts from the class discussion.
Chapter 10
Vv 1-18
According to vv1-2, why were sacrifices necessary?
The Law required them.
To cover sins.
It was a "shadow" of the ultimate solution to sin.
Sacrificial animal blood cannot perfectly forgive sin.
The reality is that perfect forgiveness of sin requires a voluntary sacrifice. That requirement was not met until the crucifixion of Jesus, which He voluntarily agreed to.
Animal sacrifices were chosen to be sacrificed--they did not choose to be sacrificed.

What did the Hebrews need as a “reminder of sin”? Why? (again)
Because of the lack of perfect forgiveness, the Hebrew understanding of sin was incomplete.

Sacrifices for known sins was done on an individual basis.

Carefully read vv5-10. What does 5a mean? Where is 5b-7 found?
5a. Christ's birth is compared to creation. It refers to a return to the direct communication with God and Adam and Eve enjoyed.
5b. Psalm 40:6-8, but this is David's restatement of 1 Samuel 15:22+
God prefers obedience to sacrifice.
For you to think about: Is sacrifice easier than obedience?

Vv8-10 are a commentary on vv5-7. What are two key points here?
We came up with four, not two.

- God is God.
- Christ came and willingly gave His life.
- This replaces many incomplete sacrifices with ONE perfect sacrifice because the incomplete sacrifices did not cleanse the heart of the sinner.
- We've been forgiven and made holy.
