Thoughts on Questions from Hebrews Ch 11 on 3/18

THOUGHTS ON HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS

My Sunday School Life Group is studying Hebrews. Every Monday, I post questions that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I invite you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts.

On Wednesdays, I post some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider and compare with your thoughts.

These questions were discussed in my Life Group Sunday. This post presents thoughts from the class discussion.

Chapter 11
Vv 29-40

Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah
Leaders (also called "judges") of the tribes of Israel before Israel had a king.
Performed acts of heroism and helped the Israelites to gain control of the land (Canaan) promised to Abraham and his descendants.
David
A great warrior and Israel’s greatest king. He made Jerusalem the capital of Israel and had the sacred chest brought there. He was the father of Solomon, a wise king who built the first temple in Jerusalem.
Slew the giant Goliath and helped the Israelites to conquer Canaan.
1 Sam 16.1--1 Kgs 2.11; especially, 1 Sam 17
Samuel
Samuel was a prophet and the last judge of Israel. He poured oil on the heads of Saul and David to show that God had chosen them to be kings of Israel.

There’s a change in the focus of who is faithful in vv28-29. How? Why?
Shift of focus is from people to actions à FAITH

Attack or Defend: Rahab is the most significant faith example in this chapter.
Boundless grace.
Ostracized, but she believed in the justice and righteousness of God.
She trusted strangers to honor their word.
The answer to the question is this in the book of James
You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? James 2:20, 21, 25
