1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

3. Pentecost

Fear.

Prayer.

Community.

Tongues of fire.

 

 

• The Holy Spirit arrived on Pentecost—it was not the first visit.
• Phrases like “the Spirit of the Lord came upon him” are sprinkled—sparingly—throughout the Old Testament. Each Old Testament visit was specific for a time, place, task, and person.

• This time in this place to these people, the task begins. Thousands of people of at least fourteen nationalities repent of their sins and are saved on the day the Holy Spirit arrives.

• Read about Othniel (Judges 3:10), Gideon (Judges 6:34) or Samson (Judges 14:6,19; 15:14). They were filled with the Holy Spirit. They did something significant. 

 

Once for each filling.

 

• Based on the Old Testament model, the Holy Spirit should have returned to God’s presence after verse 4, and Peter and the others should have faded into the fabric of Jewish history. But …

• This time, thanks to Christ’s symbolic tearing of the Veil of the Temple on the day he died, the Holy Spirit is always present in the world.
