Thoughts on Study Questions from Acts Ch 2 from 7/15

My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. Monday, I posted the questions we discussed the day before. Today, I’m posting some of the comments from the class discussion.

If you’d like a PDF file of the questions, email me at crd.author@gmail.com

Chapter 2
V1-13
What event does this "other language" aspect of Pentecost correct?
The curse of the Tower of Babel.

In verse 13, "some made fun of them." Who might this have been?
The Jews who lived in Jerusalem and didn't understand all the dialects.
Other Jews from far countries.
Romans in the crowd.
Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Priests.

Chapter 2
V14-36
This has been called "Peter's first sermon." What are some characteristics and major themes of this sermon?
The phrase in the cloud emphasizes that Jesus ministry was more than just filling time. A huge number of people at the time knew Him or of Him.
Peter finishes his transformation from betrayer to The Rock Jesus spoke of in Matthew 16:18
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Imagine yourself delivering this verse to the crowd. Who's your target? How do they react? Acts 2:22-24
“Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24“But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Peter emphasizes the lawlessness involved in the crucifixion of Jesus. This had to rankle the Jewish religious leaders.

Why would Peter begin with the prophet Joel?
Joel was a little-known prophet in his time, but he came out a winner in the end.
He spoke about drunkenness in addition to his prophecy about what happened earlier that day. It was a double blow to the mockers.

Peter moves from Old Testament prophecy to hard-hitting condemnation of the crowd in vv22-23. How does this set up vv24-28?
The religious leaders thought that they'd stopped Jesus.
But...
Death was defeated and eternal life in heaven became a reality.

What is the significance of using David as an example?
David was the most revered of all the kings of Isreal.
He was a voice of authority, "since David said this, it must be true."
Peter sequences several Psalms in case someone in the audience missed his point in any previous quotes.

This is some off-topic discussion that I think is worth your consideration.
All rabbis in Judea were trained in Galilee. All those rabbis and their followers would know about all Peter says.

We got this far this week.

What explanation (almost in passing) does Peter give for the cause of the events of the day?
Verse 36 contains two key terms in describing Jesus. What are they are why is each significant?
1
2
Chapter 2
V37-41
Why would the crowd be "cut to the heart" by Peter's message?
Explain Peter's reply to the question "What shall we do?"
How effective was Peter's sermon?
Chapter 2
V42-47
This section describes the first "Christian" church. List as many characteristics of this church as you can.

Which characteristic made the greatest impression on the people of Jerusalem?
Which characteristics would be easiest for the church of today to attain? which the hardest? Why?
How do we know this church was evangelistic?
